An innervated retroauricular skin flap for total earlobule reconstruction.

In this article, the authors describe a technique for total earlobule reconstruction in a patient who underwent earlobule excision for basal cell carcinoma. The reconstruction was by means of an innervated retroauricular skin flap, folded double. The flap presented preserved skin sensitivity over all the reconstructed area, which is compromised by those techniques using a cranially or medially based flap which lead to the reconstruction of an insensible earlobule. This is a very important aspect of this technique, especially for those who wear pendant earrings, since a non-sensitive lobule would be more vulnerable to traumas causing laceration. Expression of the human XPB/ERCC-3 excision repair gene-homolog in the sponge Geodia cydonium after exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Abstract The marine demosponge Geodia cydonium encodes a gene, termed GCXPB , which displays 62% identity to the human XPB/ERCC-3 gene that specifically corrects the repair defect in xeroderma pigmentosum and in Cockayne's syndrome. The cDNA was isolated and characterized the deduced aa sequence, XPB_GEOCY, with the calculated size of 91,541 Da comprises the characteristic domains found in the related helicases. Different patterns of in vivo pro-oxidant states in a set of cancer- or aging-related genetic diseases

A comparative evaluation is reported of pro-oxidant states in 82 patients with ataxia telangectasia (AT), Bloom syndrome (BS), Down syndrome (DS), Fanconi anemia (FA), Werner syndrome (WS), and xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) vs 98 control donors. The endoribonuclease DICER facilitates chromatin decondensation during lesion recognition following UV exposure. Chitale and Richly show that DICER mediates the recruitment of the methyltransferase MMSET, which catalyzes the dimethylation of histone H4 at lysine 20 and facilitates the recruitment of the nucleotide excision repair factor XPA.
